The List: Science and Environmental Happenings around Boulder, Week of Oct. 15

This is a great week in Boulder for finding out about different species and ecosystems. Learn about what’s happening with the pine beetle epidemic on Tuesday and then don’t forget to celebrate Fossil Day on Wednesday! Or get away from the mountains and explore the seas on Saturday buy attending the Ocean Film Festival.

The Mountain Pine Beetle’s Unprecedented Epidemic

What? Jeff Mitton and Scott Ferrenberg, two CU Boulder biologists, will share their research on the mountain pine beetle epidemic. They will discuss how the magnitude of the epidemic is larger than previously recorded and is reaching trees at higher elevations than before. Find out what our forests may look like in the future and how it is influencing our communities.

Fossil Day at the Farmers’ Market

What? In celebration of Fossil Day, there will be a table at the Boulder Farmers’ Market to explore real fossils as well as make a take-home craft.

Supper with Snakes

What? While enjoying a catered spaghetti dinner, partake in games and trivia about snakes. Then, Robert Jardin, a resident reptile expert, will give a presentation all about snakes. There will be live snakes to look at and touch. This event is open to anyone who is comfortable with snakes.

Where? Paleontology Hall, CU Museum, CU Boulder

When? Thursday, October 18th, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Legal Pluralism in South Indian Fisheries: A Typology of Interplays

What? Dr. Maarten Bavinck, director of the Center for Maritime Research, will give a presentation on how law is affecting the management of fisheries on the Coromandel Coast. The talk will investigate the interactions between various legal systems in the context of fishing.

Ocean Film Festival

What? The Colorado Ocean Coalition will be showing independent films throughout the day on Saturday. The films selected from the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival are meant to capture the beauty, power and mysteries of the ocean. There will be a family program in the afternoon and an evening program includes a reception with symposium speakers, including Jean-Michel Cousteau.

When? Saturday, October 20th, 1:00 – 10:00 p.m.
