The List: Science and Environmental Happenings around Boulder, Week of Oct. 8

What? New Mexico Senator Jeff Bingaman will be discussing emerging issues in the fields of oil, energy and natural resources that will be valuable to policymakers, business executives, the academic community and practitioners.

Beetles (Coleoptera) Associated with Forensic Investigations

What? Entomologist Boris Kondratieff will talk about how beetles that are found near human corpses can be used in forensics of criminal investigations and will highlight the significance of beetles as both decomposers and scavengers. Insect evidence can be used to estimate the Post Mortem Interval. No graphic elements will be used in the presentation.

Communicating Climate Change: Lessons Learned at the National Snow and Ice Data Center

What? The Director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, Mark Serreze, will discuss the difficulties of communicating the science of climate change to the public. Serreze will cover four key lessons the center has learned over the last five years about discussing climate change.

Between God and Green

What? Dr. Katharine Wilkinson, author of “Between God & Green,” will discuss how evangelicals are cultivating a middle ground on climate change and the lessons that can be learned from it. Commentary and a discussion will follow the talk.

The Planets Uncovered

What? Explore the interesting characteristics of each of the planets in our solar system. This interactive presentation is great for children in 4th grade and up.
